Start from the operation
The most useful starting point is not the building but the operation inside it: process flow, equipment footprints, material movement and staffing patterns determine the spans, heights and circulation the structure has to provide.
Services planned with the structure
Power distribution, ventilation, drainage and compressed air routing should be considered alongside the structural layout rather than afterwards, to avoid clashes and difficult access.
Plan for expansion
Where future growth is plausible, bay layout, end frames and services capacity can be planned so that extension is a straightforward addition rather than a rebuild.
